BOOKING ENGINE Β· PMS Β· API Β· 7 MIN READ
Before implementation, there should be clear limits of responsibility of each system and business consequences of each event.
1. What is the source of truth?
Availability, price, rules of stay, guest and reservation status should be determined by a system that is authoritative. Without it, both ends can change the same data, and the team later manually searches for which version is correct.
2. What happens when data changes or an error occurs?
Changes to booking dates, cancellations, failed payments and temporarily unavailable APIs are normal operating scenarios. An integration must record each event, prevent duplicate processing and create a clear case for a person when automatic recovery is not possible.
3. Test business scenarios
The test is not completed by confirming that the API returns a response. It is necessary to check the entire flow from the search to the operational status, including changes and disconnections.
Minimum checklist before integration release
Document the field mapping, the rule for each booking status, the allowed change direction and the way to reprocess the message. This list connects the business process with the technical contract between the systems and facilitates maintenance API integrations.
Before going live, test real guest journeys: search, creating and amending a booking, cancellation, payment and system recovery after an outage. If the booking engine needs to combine several data sources, also see our article on to the development of the booking platform; for a wider context read the difference between PMS and Channel Manager.
FAQ
Can one system change prices and another change availability?
It can, but only if the data responsibility is explicitly defined and tested for each change. Otherwise, the possibility of conflicts and manual corrections increases.
What happens when the API is temporarily unavailable?
The integration should log the attempt, control resubmissions without duplicates, and give the team a visible signal when intervention is needed.
Is it enough to test the API response?
It is not. It is necessary to confirm the business outcome through the entire flow, including the state in the PMS, the confirmation to the guest and the operational task.
